During my commute to work, I normally listen to the radio. This morning the radio host conducted an interview with the newly elected Mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, Mr. William A. Bell Sr. The thing that really touched me during this interview was Mayor Bell’s response to the question of quitting. I’m paraphrasing but in essence what the Mayor said was … if you love something and you truly believe in it, your passion for it won’t let you give up.
Mr. Bell has run for Mayor before and even served as interim Mayor but this is the first time he was elected. He mentioned that each time he ran for the office and didn’t win, the loss did not deter his commitment to the community and he continued to serve with the mindset that his service was not linked to his political title. He also made reference to believing in “self”. “If you don’t believe in yourself, how can you expect others to believe in you? “, is what he said. What a powerful statement!
The Mayor’s comments were an encouragement to me and they reminded me of the definition of love as described in the Bible in the book of 1 Corinthians chapter 13 starting at verse 4. Below is how it is phrased in the New International Version (NIV) …
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails …If you do what you love, you can never give up and success is imminent!
